In the center of Kunigami Village, elementary and junior high schools, post office, old-fashioned shops,
and more line the main street.
The village, which sits by the entrance to Yambaru Forest and its rich ecosystem, was once crowded with passers-by.
However, the traffic volume has dropped sharply since the opening of the Hentona Tunnel on National Highway 58. However, in recent years, the "Hentona Odori-kai" has been created, and events that use local resources and ideas are actively held, and the area is regaining its former vibrancy. This year, two works are on exhibition in this remarkable area, attracting artists visiting Yanbaru.

Completed in 1925, it is the oldest existing reinforced concrete building in Okinawa. The building has attracted attention as a pioneering example of a town hall building in Japan, and was designated as a tangible cultural property (building) by the Okinawa prefecture in 1997.
The innovative design by Tsutomu Kiyomura fully takes into account the climate and climate of Okinawa, and has excellent features such as the octagonal plan shape, which is intended to reduce wind pressure from typhoons. This is a building that has survived the war of Okinawa and continues to stand as a symbol of the village. I would like to savor it along with the exhibited works.
